Hayden Paddon has explained how he made previous extensive experience count to begin his first FIA European Rally Championship challenge with victory.

Paddon, a one-time World championship event winner, took top spot on Rally Serras de Fafe, Felgueiras, Boticas, Vieira do Minho e Cabeceiras de Basto when long-term leader Mikko Heikkilä was forced to change a damaged tyre on the Power Stage yesterday afternoon.

Having fought his way up to second position on the challenging gravel event, Paddon was perfectly placed to profit from the Finnish driver’s misfortune to land his maiden ERC win aboard a Pirelli-equipped Hyundai i20 N Rally2.

“We weren’t the outright fastest this weekend but we had the pace to hold it consistently throughout the rally and I’ve learnt from the past you’ve gotta be fast over all stages, not just one or two,” said the 35-year-old. “But also you’ve got to look after the tyres, especially when it’s rough like it was, so for sure it helps to have that experience.

“We’ve been pushing, but not taking the risks and that’s been the whole philosophy for the whole weekend, pick a speed and hold it and today that went down quite well.”

Although Paddon’s measured approach was key to his success in Portugal, he acknowledges there will be no holding back on the ERC’s high-speed gravel rallies.

“When we go to Poland, Latvia, Sweden, these young guys are seriously fast and go seriously flat out and we have to keep up with it as well,” New Zealander Paddon said.

Mikko Heikkilä is determined to look ahead to the next round of the FIA European Rally Championship after he suffered late heartbreak on Rally Serras de Fafe, Felgueiras, Boticas, Vieira do Minho e Cabeceiras de Basto yesterday (Sunday).

The Finnish champion was leading the ERC season opener by 2.8sec starting the event-deciding Power Stage but dropped to eighth in the final order stopping to change a damaged front-left tyre approximately halfway through the 14.9-kilometre Lameirinha test.

It was poor reward for the 31-year-old, who’d shown great speed and composure to lead from the seventh stage of the challenging gravel event in northern Portugal.

“I was quite surprised with my pace, I wasn’t expecting this because I had not driven before in the [wet and muddy] conditions we had on the first day,” said the Michelin-equipped Škoda Fabia Rally2 Evo driver. “But, okay, when we saw we could do [the times] we wanted to push and keep fighting so I’m quite disappointed after two days going flat out all the time that this happens on the last stage.”

Roberto Daprà reversed an overnight deficit of 1m

Roberto Daprà reversed an overnight deficit of 1min 43.1sec to score his maiden FIA ERC4 victory as Ernesto Cunha tried but was unable to maintain his once comfortable margin on Rally Serras de Fafe, Felgueiras, Boticas, Vieira do Minho e Cabeceiras de Basto.

Portuguese driver Cunha excelled during Saturday’s rain-hit opening leg with three stage wins as Italian youngster Daprà made gaining experience and preparing for his upcoming Junior ERC bid his focus following a tyre-damage delay on leg one.

But Cunha’s lead would soon unravel after the watersplash on SS11 as his co-driver Carlos Magalhães explained afterwards. “The first stage was not big attack because we had time enough to manage but on the second stage after the watersplash on a tight right corner the windscreen became completely foggy and we see nothing, we went off. The front-left tyre came out of the rim and we went to the end of the stage like that. We also had a small problem with the brakes and again on the third stage.”

Cunha returned to the midday halt in Fafe 19.4sec in front of Daprà, who would then close to within 4.3sec of the Portuguese leader with just the Power Stage remaining. And by going 13.285sec faster than his rival through the rally’s deciding 14.9 kilometres, it was the 21-year-old Daprà who triumphed by 9.0sec

Mikko Heikkilä will carry a 4.2sec lead into Sunday’s final leg at the opening round of the 2023 FIA European Rally Championship, Rally Serras de Fafe, Felgueiras, Boticas, Vieira do Minho e Cabeceiras de Basto.

The reigning Finnish champion, at the wheel of a Michelin-equipped Škoda Fabia Rally2 Evo, initially moved in front on SS3 before slipping back to second place as the morning loop progressed. However, a time-topping performance – coupled with a delay for Craig Breen – on SS7 means it’s Heikkilä who leads at the overnight halt in Fafe, with Mads Østberg in second and Hayden Paddon third.

“For sure it was quite challenging,” Heikkilä said at the completion of the morning loop. “For me the most difficult part was to find the grip or the muddy places because you don’t know beforehand and it was quite difficult to guess. I have never faced these conditions before because in Finland, if it’s raining or wet, it doesn’t get this muddy. But it’s good learning and the pace has been okay, so we are in the fight.”

Following the event-opening super special in Fafe on Friday night, which was won by double Portuguese champion Ricardo Teodósio, leg one continued this morning on rain-hit gravel roads east of the host city.

Ernesto Cunha is on course for a home victory in the FIA ERC4 category on Rally Serras de Fafe, Felgueiras, Boticas, Vieira do Minho e Cabeceiras de Basto, the Portuguese driver making the most of co-driver Carlos Magalhães’ extensive experience.

Driving a Peugeot 208 Rally4, Cunha leads Polish Ford Fiesta Rally4 driver Tymoteusz Jocz by 1m32.2sec with Italian Roberto Daprà completing the overnight podium in another Peugeot.

Cunha is only in his third full season of competing, while Magalhães began his career almost 25 years ago. And with this morning’s rain- and mud-hit stages particularly challenging for the two-wheel-drive crews, the knowledge and calming influence of Magalhães proved to be an advantage.

“It’s not been easy because all the stages were muddy and with two-wheel drive this was not easy, particularly when there was a lot of uphill,” said Magalhães. “There was not much grip and we lose a lot of time but it was the same for everyone.”

Magalhães was a late replacement for Rai Raimundo, who was not able to take part for personal reasons. He’s been impressed by the performance of his inexperienced driver.

“I’m here to help Ernesto only for this event, but he has been fantastic and we match together quite okay,” said Magalhães. “The conditions are quite new for him but he is doing well.”

Second-placed Jocz could have been closer to Cunha had he not damaged his Fiesta’s steering on SS3.

“It has been very hard, the last stage was very slippery with a lot of fog in the mountains,” said Jocz, who is competing in Portugal for the first time. “The stages were good but very hard, it was the first time for me in these conditions. In the second stage we had a little accident on a fence by the end but it was only light on the front-right and the steering is not straight but only this.”

O Parque Fechado desta edição do Rally Serras de Fafe, Felgueiras, Boticas, Vieira do Minho e Cabeceiras de Basto, primeira prova do Campeonato de Portugal de Ralis e também do FIA-ERC (Campeonato da Europa), apresenta um valor de recheio que supera os 10 milhões de euros, se atendermos à excecional lista de inscritos, apenas no respeitante aos Rally2.

Com nada menos que 44 Rally2 (RC2), entre Skoda Fabia, Hyundai i20, Citroen C3 e Ford Fiesta, e para um valor médio e mínimo de 220 mil euros por unidade – o preço dos Rally2 é “controlado” pela FIA, de modo a evitar a escalada de custos –, chegamos ao montante total de 9,680 milhões de euros. Contudo, a esta montante há que acrescentar, logicamente, o material consumível que cada equipa dispõe para uma prova de dois dias.

Na escala de valor e de competitividade dos ralis, os Rally2 são o segundo tipo de veículos na hierarquia da FIA (Federação Internacional do Automóvel), apenas superados pelos híbridos Rally1 (Ford e Hyundai e Toyota), que são as “estrelas” do Mundial de Ralis (WRC). O valor estimado de cada uma dessas “máquinas” é, imagine-se, de 1 milhão de euros, montante que ainda fica baste aquém do veículo TT elétrico que a Audi estreou este ano no Dakar: 4 milhões!

Em termos absolutos, é evidente que o recheio das viaturas do parque fechado deste primeiro rali da temporada alcança valores muito acima, até, dos 20 milhões, incluindo, logicamente, as restantes viaturas da lista de participantes, como os RC3, os RC4 e os RC5.

A prova de abertura do Campeonato de Portugal de Ralis (CPR), o Rali Serras de Fafe, Felgueiras, Boticas, Vieira do Minho e Cabeceiras de Basto vai ser alvo de uma cobertura televisiva inédita, com mais de 14 horas em direto no canal 4 da SportTV.

O Demoporto (Clube de Desportos Motorizados do Porto), organizador da prova – também a primeira do Campeonato da Europa (FIA-ERC) – graças ao acordo com o promotor da competição (WRC), que é o mesmo do Campeonato do Mundo, garantiu uma amplitude mediática ao nível de qualquer evento do Mundial. Serão nada menos que 11 os “diretos” da SportTV4, o primeiro dos quais na noite de sexta-feira, quando tem início o rali com a super-especial desenhada no centro da cidade de Fafe.

Depois, tanto no sábado como no domingo, é possível acompanhar tudo sobre o rali, já que o trabalho das diversas equipas de reportagem da produtora WRC vai ser levado à antena da SportTV4 ao longo (manhã/tarde) de cada um dos dias, sem esquecer a “power stage” (Lameirinha 2), culminando com a cerimónia de consagração dos vencedores. Craig Breen is the driver to beat in the FIA Europ

Craig Breen is the driver to beat in the FIA European Rally Championship after he went quickest on the Qualifying Stage for Rally Serras de Fafe, Felgueiras, Boticas, Vieira do Minho e Cabeceiras de Basto.

Having set the pace in Free Practice with a 2min 14.969sec, Breen went faster still on the Qualifying Stage, which uses an identical 3.61-kilometre layout, with a 2min 13.769sec attack to start of the ERC’s 70th-anniverary season on top form in his Pirelli-equipped Hyundai i20 N Rally2.

Mads Østberg, starting his first full ERC campaign, was second fastest in his MRF Tyres-equipped Citroën C3 Rally2 with a time of 2min 14.456sec, as Michelin-shod Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 driver Miko Marcyck demonstrated his ERC podium pedigree with a 2min 14.510sec, which was good enough for third.

Finnish champion Mikko Heikkilä, driving a Michelin-equipped Škoda Fabia Rally2 Evo for local team The Racing Factory, was a strong fourth on a 2min 14.532sec. Georg Linnamaë was fifth, one place ahead of Hungarian federation-supported Miklós Csomós

French Gravel champion Mathieu Franceschi, on his first ERC appearance in a Rally2 car, set an impressive seventh fastest time, a 2min 15.375sec, aboard his Michelin-equipped Škoda Fabia Rally2 Evo.

SSS Fafe is the first of 17 stages and uses a combination of Tarmac roads and cobbled streets in the centre of Fafe from 21:05 local time today.

🚦It’s FIA European Rally Championship time in Fafe this week. Here are some facts about the opening event of the 2023 season, Rally Serras de Fafe, Felgueiras, Boticas, Vieira do Minho e Cabeceiras de Basto.

🔛What’s in a name? The 2023 ERC season opener’s longer-than-usual name comes from the involvement of the municipalities of Fafe, Felgueiras, Boticas, Vieira do Minho and Cabeceiras de Basto.

🔛The big winner: Step forward Fernando Peres, whose tally of six wins is a Fafe record. Bruno Magalhães and Carlos Bica are equal second on the list having triumphed three times.

🔛Thirty-six and counting: Bica was the winner when the first Fafe rally took place in 1988 under the Rally do Porto banner. This year’s edition is the 36th running and the third to count for ERC points.

🔛Famous winners: Two drivers with World Rally Championship event-winning pedigree have won in Fafe. Dani Sordo triumphed in 2019 with Andreas Mikkelsen taking the victory in 2021, the event’s first appearance in the ERC.

🔛Spanish gain: Nil Solans from Spain joined compatriot Sordo and Norwegian Mikkelsen as the only non-Portuguese winners of the event when he finished first in 2022.
